Low-Cost Therapy in Minneapolis: You deserve Support, no matter your budget

Finding a therapist can feel like a full-time job — and an exhausting one at that. You’re already carrying something heavy, and now you’re supposed to navigate insurance networks, deductibles, waitlists, and provider directories on top of it all? It’s a lot. And for so many people, the cost of therapy is the wall that stops them before they even get started.
At MindBalance Mental Health Care, we see you. We know that the mental health care system in the United States is far from perfect, and that too many people fall through the gaps — not because they don’t want support, but because the path to getting it is filled with barriers that were never designed with everyone in mind.
That’s why we’ve worked to build something different. This post is here to guide you through what we offer, why we offer it, and how you can take the next step — without the overwhelm.
Why Accessing Therapy Is So Hard Right Now
Before we get into our programs, let’s just acknowledge something: if you’ve tried to find affordable therapy recently, you know it can feel nearly impossible. You are not imagining it. Here are some of the most common barriers our community faces:
You can’t find a provider who feels like a fit. Finding someone who truly gets your background, your values, and what you’re going through takes time — and the mental and emotional energy to keep searching can run dry fast.
You’re uninsured. Without insurance, the full cost of a therapy session — often $100–$200 or more per session — is simply out of reach for most people.
You’re underinsured. Having insurance doesn’t always mean therapy is affordable. Many plans come with a high deductible — meaning you pay a set amount of your medical costs out of pocket before your insurance begins covering anything. Here's what that can look like in practice: the full rate for a standard 50-minute therapy session is often around $160. If your insurance has a contracted or negotiated rate with your provider, you may pay a reduced amount — sometimes around $125 per session — even before your deductible is met. That's roughly a 20% discount off the full cost, but it still means you're paying $125 out of pocket every session until you've reached your deductible. For someone with a $3,000 deductible, that's about 24 sessions before insurance begins contributing anything. While these are estimates only— actual rates vary by provider and plan — but they reflect the reality that even insured people can find therapy financially out of reach.
You’re covered under someone else’s insurance. Many people receive health coverage through a family member’s plan — a parent, a partner, a spouse, or another dependent relationship. This can be incredibly helpful, but it can also create a complicated situation. If the person whose plan you’re on would receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) — a document from the insurance company summarizing what services were used and billed — using your insurance to access mental health care could mean they find out you’re in therapy. For some people, this could create real harm: damaged relationships, family conflict, loss of housing or financial support, or situations that put your safety and wellbeing at serious risk.
If any of this sounds familiar, please know: there is a path forward. And you don’t have to figure it out alone.
How MindBalance Mental Health Care Is Working to Change This
At MindBalance, our commitment is to holistic, anti-oppressive care — meaning we believe that mental health support should be available to everyone, regardless of income, insurance status, or life circumstances. We approach therapy as a space where your whole self is welcome, where the systems and experiences that have shaped you are taken seriously, and where you are never made to feel like a burden for needing support.
We offer low-cost therapy in Minneapolis and across Minnesota through two distinct programs, both delivered by graduate-level clinical interns working under close, board-approved clinical supervision. Below, we’ll walk you through both options.
Program 1: Pause & Connect — Low-Cost Therapy in Minneapolis for Students
Who it’s for: Current students and recent graduates who need affordable, confidential support.
If you’re enrolled in a post-secondary program — whether that’s a two- or four-year college, a vocational or trade program, or a graduate or professional degree program — or if you’ve graduated within the last 12 months, our Pause & Connect program was built with you in mind.
We know that being a student comes with its own unique pressures: academic stress, financial strain, life transitions, identity questions, and often a complete lack of bandwidth to deal with it all. Pause & Connect is here to give you a place to breathe.
How it works:
• Sessions are $25 per session with a graduate-level clinical intern trainee
• Insurance is not billed — so there are no EOBs, no surprise paperwork, and no one else needs to know
• Services are available in person in Minneapolis and online throughout all of Minnesota
• You’ll need to show proof of current enrollment (such as a current class registration) or proof of recent graduation (such as a diploma or copy of your transcripts)
Who qualifies:
• You are 18 or older
• You are currently enrolled in a qualifying post-secondary program, or you graduated within the last 12 months
• You are uninsured, underinsured, out of network with us, or in a situation where using your insurance to access mental health care could create harm or distress in your life
Not sure whether you qualify? That’s okay. During your initial consultation call, one of our team members will talk through your situation with you and help determine the best fit — no pressure, no judgment.
Program 2: Open Path Collective — Low-Cost Therapy for Adults in Minnesota
Who it’s for: Adults who are not current students and need affordable, ongoing mental health support.
If you’re not a current student or recent graduate, our second low-cost therapy option is through our partnership with Open Path Collective — a nonprofit organization whose mission is to make therapy accessible to uninsured or underinsured individuals and families. You can learn more at openpathcollective.org.
How Open Path Collective works:
Open Path Collective maintains a network of therapists across the country who offer reduced-fee sessions to members. To access these therapists — including our clinical intern trainees at MindBalance — you pay a one-time membership fee of $65 to Open Path Collective, which gives you lifetime access to the network.
Once you’re a member, sessions with our graduate-level clinical intern trainees at MindBalance are $30 per session. As with Pause & Connect, insurance is not billed.
Open Path Collective membership is a one-time cost, not a recurring fee. Your membership stays with you and can connect you to reduced-fee therapists wherever you are in the country, for as long as you need.
This program is available for individuals who are:
• Adults not currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a post-secondary program
• Uninsured or underinsured
• In need of affordable, confidential mental health support
Sessions are available in person in Minneapolis and online to anyone in Minnesota.
“But Wait — What About the Interns?”
We hear this question, and we think it’s a really good one. Let’s talk about it openly.
Our graduate-level clinical intern trainees are completing the final, supervised internship year of their master’s degree program in counseling, clinical social work, clinical mental health, or a closely related field. They are not brand-new to mental health work — they are currently enrolled in a Minnesota-based graduate program, learning from faculty, completing coursework, and practicing in clinical settings.
Here at MindBalance, they receive:
• Weekly individual supervision with a licensed therapist who is also a Board-approved clinical supervisor in Minnesota
• Biweekly group supervision to collaborate, learn, and reflect alongside peers
• Supervision through their graduate program as well, providing an additional layer of support and accountability
• Access to the most current research, tools, and frameworks in mental health care — because they’re literally studying this right now
Our interns don’t work in isolation. They are among the most closely monitored and supported practitioners in any clinical setting — which means you’re getting thorough, thoughtful, well-resourced care.
We are also deeply committed to anti-oppressive, holistic approaches to therapy — and our interns bring that lens into every session. That means your culture, your identity, your community, and the systems that have shaped your life are seen as relevant to your mental health, not as side notes.
A Few More Things to Know
Session breaks: Our clinical intern trainees follow an academic-year schedule, which means therapy pauses during winter and summer breaks. We plan ahead with you — before any break, we make sure you have the resources, coping strategies, and support you need to feel held during that time.
What happens when an intern completes their program? Our intern year runs from June 23 through May 1. If your intern graduates and moves on, we will work to connect you with an incoming intern so that your care can continue without a major disruption. We’ll also explore other options with you to make sure you’re supported in whatever way makes the most sense for your life.
Continuity matters to us. We know that building a relationship with a therapist takes time and trust. We don’t take that lightly, and we’ll do everything we can to make transitions as smooth as possible.
Meet Our Incoming Interns — Joining Us This June
We are so excited to welcome two new graduate-level clinical intern trainees to MindBalance this June. Both are second-year students in the Counselor Education Program at the University of Minnesota — a rigorous, values-driven program that prepares deeply thoughtful clinicians. They bring warmth, lived experience, and a genuine commitment to meeting people where they are.
Linh has a special interest in working with immigrant communities, life transitions, relationship issues, and trauma. She identifies as a child of immigrants, a first-generation college student, and an able-bodied bisexual cisgender woman. Her own lived experiences shape the care and cultural sensitivity she brings to her work — and if any of her areas of focus resonate with you, we hope you’ll take a moment to read more about her.
Mariana brings a deep focus to adoptees and adoption experiences, the BIPOC community, the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, identity exploration, and anxiety. She identifies as a Chinese American transracial and transnational adoptee, lesbian, and a cisgender woman. Her personal journey informs the affirming, grounded presence she brings to her clinical work — and we know she will be a wonderful fit for clients seeking someone who truly understands the complexities of identity and belonging.
You Don’t Have to Wait Until You Can “Afford” Therapy
One of the most painful things about the current mental health care landscape is that it asks the people who are already struggling the most to jump through the most hoops. That’s not okay. And while we can’t fix the whole system, we can offer something real — right now — to people who need it.
Whether you’re a student feeling the weight of everything at once, an adult navigating life without the safety net of good insurance, or someone who simply can’t risk their insurance plan being the thing that outs your need for support, we want you to know that there is a place for you here.
Low-cost therapy in Minneapolis and across Minnesota is available, and we’d love to help you find it.
