Thinking about therapy but not sure how online sessions actually work - or whether they'd even be a good fit for you? You're not alone. Online therapy has become a real option for a lot of people across Minnesota, and for many, it's genuinely changed what getting support looks like. But it's not a perfect fit for everyone, and we think it's important for you to have a clear picture before you decide.

At MindBalance Mental Health Care, we're an independent, Minneapolis-based practice offering both in-person and telehealth therapy across Minnesota. This guide covers the real benefits of online therapy, the genuine limitations, how licensure works (because yes, that matters), and what it means to work with a local team that actually knows this state.

What Is Online Therapy, Exactly?

Online therapy — sometimes called telehealth, virtual therapy, or teletherapy — is therapy delivered via a secure video platform rather than in a physical office. You and your therapist meet at a scheduled time, just as you would in person, but from wherever you are.

Sessions tend to feel more similar to in-person therapy than most people expect. You can still see facial expressions, have a real conversation, work through hard things, and build a genuine therapeutic relationship. The medium is different; the care doesn't have to be.

The Real Benefits of Online Therapy

It can remove some significant barriers to access

For many people, getting to a therapy office is genuinely hard. Online therapy can help if:

•       You live in a rural part of Minnesota where mental health providers are scarce

•       You have a disability, chronic illness, or mobility challenges that make traveling difficult

•       Your work schedule or caregiving responsibilities make it hard to carve out commute time

•       You don't have reliable transportation

•       You experience anxiety that makes leaving home feel overwhelming

For folks in these situations, online therapy isn't a compromise — it can actually make consistent care possible.

More flexibility in scheduling

Without commute time on either end, it can be easier to fit a session into a lunch break, a gap between school pickups, or a free hour in the evening. This kind of flexibility matters, especially for people juggling a lot.

Comfort of your own space

Some people find it easier to open up when they're in a familiar environment — their own couch, their bedroom, somewhere they feel safe. If that's true for you, it's worth knowing.

Continuity during life disruptions

If you travel for work, move across the state, or go through a period when getting to appointments in person just isn't realistic, online therapy can help you stay connected to your care without starting over.

The Real Limitations - Because We Want You to Have the Full Picture

We value transparency in mental health care. Online therapy isn't the right fit for every situation, and some of the barriers to access that therapy tries to reduce can actually show up differently in a telehealth setting.

Not everyone has a private space

Therapy requires privacy. If you live with other people — roommates, family members, a partner — finding a space where you can speak freely without being heard can be genuinely difficult. Sitting in a parked car or using headphones can help, but it's worth thinking through before your first session.

Reliable internet access isn't universal

Telehealth depends on a stable internet connection. In many rural parts of Minnesota, broadband access is still inconsistent. If your connection drops in and out, or if you're working from limited data, that can disrupt sessions in frustrating ways.

Technology itself can be a barrier

Not everyone is comfortable navigating video platforms, and that discomfort is valid. If technology feels like an obstacle rather than a tool, it can add stress to something that's supposed to reduce it.

Some clinical situations call for in-person care

Online therapy works well for many people and many concerns. But there are situations — including some mental health crises or certain therapeutic approaches — where being physically present with a provider is important. We'll always be honest with you about whether in-person care might serve you better.

How Licensure Works - And Why It Matters For Your Care

This is something many people don't realize until they're mid-search, so we want to explain it clearly.

Therapists are licensed at the state level, not nationally. That means a therapist can only provide therapy to someone who is physically located in a state where that therapist is licensed — at the time of the session.

So if you live in Minnesota but are traveling in Wisconsin for your appointment, your therapist can't legally see you that day (unless they're also licensed in Wisconsin). And a therapist licensed only in California cannot see you in Minnesota, even over video.

At MindBalance Mental Health Care, our therapists are licensed in Minnesota. We can see you for online therapy if you are located anywhere in Minnesota at the time of your session — whether that's Minneapolis, Duluth, a small town on the Iron Range, or a cabin up north. We cannot see clients outside of Minnesota during a session, even temporarily.

This matters because some larger telehealth platforms employ therapists from all over the country. It's worth confirming that whoever you work with is actually licensed in Minnesota before you start.

What Makes Working With a Local Minnesota Team Different

There are a lot of online therapy options out there now — large platforms, national providers, directories that connect you with whoever's available. We think there's something worth considering about working with an independent, Minnesota-based team instead.

We actually know this place

Minnesota has its own culture, its own seasons, its own particular rhythms. We know what it's like to go through a February here. We know the regional dynamics, the communities, and the specific stressors that come with living in this state. That kind of context isn't something you have to explain from scratch when you work with us.

We're a small, independent practice - not a platform

At MindBalance Mental Health Care, you're working with an actual team of therapists, not an algorithm that matches you to whoever's next in a queue. We take time to think carefully about fit, and we're invested in your care in a way that's hard to replicate at scale.

Our approach is intentional and values-driven

We practice from an anti-oppressive, neurodivergent-affirming framework and are grounded in body liberation and Health at Every Size (HAES) principles. That's not marketing language — it's how we actually approach care. If you've had experiences in healthcare where you felt judged, unseen, or categorized, we want you to know that this practice is built with you in mind.

Part of that means we try to demystify the parts of therapy that often feel confusing or opaque — because navigating mental health care can be hard enough without also having to guess at how the system works. We write about things like how to use your insurance for therapy and what a diagnostic assessment actually involves, because we think you deserve clear, honest information before you ever walk through a door.

We're not going anywhere

We're rooted in Minneapolis. When you work with us, you're building a relationship with a consistent team — not rotating through whoever happens to be available on a national platform.

Is Online Therapy Right For You?

Here are some honest questions to sit with:

•       Do you have a private, quiet space where you can talk freely?

•       Is your internet connection reliable enough for video calls?

•       Are you comfortable enough with technology that it won't add stress?

•       Are you located in Minnesota during your sessions?

If you answered yes to those questions, online therapy might be a genuinely good fit. If some of those feel uncertain, we'd love to talk it through with you.

We offer in-person sessions in Minneapolis, too, and we're happy to help you figure out what would actually work best for your life.
