The Intersection of Trauma and Substance Use:
An Introduction
Training Description
The experience of trauma is quite common across the human lifespan with some survivors going on to develop mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder while others engage in maladaptive coping strategies, including overuse of substances like alcohol and other drugs. Trauma survivors are also at increased risk for a wide array of other physical and interpersonal challenges, which can exacerbate concerns associated with substance use. This workshop provides an orientation to the intersection of trauma and substance use across the lifespan.
Knowledge You Will Gain
This training will enable you to differentiate between the definitions of trauma, substance, and the stage at which a disorder has emerged in a therapy participant. You will also learn to interpret the effects of systems and historical trauma as indicators of risk factors. Furthermore, you will gain insight into lifespan issues related to the intersection of mental health and substance use.
